Familiar Ink: Meister Returns to Tattoosday with an Awesome NYC Tattoo

There's something therapeutic about running posts of work I spotted over the summer. The warmth from these encounters is brightening these winter days.<br /><br />Case in point, on a bike ride out to Coney Island, I was cruising along the boardwalk when I spotted a woman on a bench, reading a book. She had tattoos so, naturally, I stopped.<br /><br />It was after I introduced myself that she recognized me, and I saw the sparrows on the backs of her calves. This was Meister, who had contributed back in January 2012 <a href="http://tattoosday.blogspot.com/2012/01/meisters-memorial-sparrows.html">here</a>.<br /><br />Meister blogs at <a href="http://www.thenervouscook.com/">The Nervous Cook</a> and is a <a href="http://www.seriouseats.com/user/profile/NervousCook">food writer</a> and coffee columnist. Now, she is a repeat subject on Tattoosday. I first met her in December 2011 on 23rd Street and 7th Avenue in Manhattan. Meister explained:<br /><blockquote class="tr_bq">"It's a map of Central Park, with some birds, and a little squirrely-o ... I love Central Park, it's my favorite part of New York City and I wanted to honor it ...it's my home. And on the other [thigh] I plan to get a lake in my husband's home town, which is Oklahoma City, to finish it off, my last piece, but I've been hesitating because it will be my last piece of work..."</blockquote><br />In addition to the red-tailed hawk and the New York City pigeon, there's a peacock because, as Meister explained, "I was running past the park the day that the peacock escaped" from the Central Park Zoo. Checking Out Patti's New Sleeve

Last year we got a pleasant surprise from a reader named Patti, who shared a <a href="http://tattoosday.blogspot.com/2011/09/patti-shares-stunning-floral-sleeve.html">stunning floral sleeve</a>, which we posted in September.<br /><br />One of the problems with interviewing people with sleeves is that it is hard to document the great work, especially when I've met them on the street. Even a collage of sleeve segments doesn't always do justice to the amazing workmanship and detail that goes into the hours of creating a sleeve.<br /><br />Fortunately for me, and by extension, you the readers of Tattoosday, Patti has stayed in touch, and she just sent me the link to a YouTube video chronicling her new peacock sleeve. Felicia Shares a Cool Peacock and an Homage to Her Favorite Horror Films

A few months back, I met a woman named Felicia in Penn Station. She is well-known for an amazing eye for detail for tattoos that appear as if they were just painted on. Garrett's Peacock Recalls the South

He also likes how the males are the fairer of the two sexes.<br /><br />What's especially remarkable is that this is a black and gray tattoo, with no plans to take on any color ink.<br /><br />The inclusion of magnolias, azaleas and violets, all in homage to the South, make this potentially dizzyingly colorful tattoo more remarkable in its basic palette. Tattoosday Goes To Hawai'i - All in the Family, Part 5 (Ulu's Amazing Plumage)

Then, last month, I was in Hawai'i, at the home of Ulu and her husband Travis.<br /><br />For the record, despite my inkspotting ways, I was never sure if I'd have the opportunity on this trip to document all my nieces' and nephews' ink. I knew I'd be seeing them, but my purpose for doing so was not tattoo-related.<br /><br />But as you may have read over the last week, there I was at Ulu and Travis's place, hanging out with family, and the subject turned inky, and out came the camera.<br /><br />Still, I wasn't sure I would be seeing the tattoo from my mom's photo - Ulu was wearing a dress and I'm always walking on eggshells when it comes to lower back tattoos. But I was taking pictures of everyone else's tattoos and Ulu's back piece was mentioned. The original piece is covered by the eye of the peacock feather.<br /><br />The artist responsible for this incredible tattoo is <a href="http://www.myspace.com/libratat2">Libra</a>, who freelances in Hawai'i, but occasionally does guest spots at <a href="http://www.myspace.com/808tattoohawaii">808 Tattoo</a>, and was at <a href="http://www.eastsidetattoostudio.com/artists.html">East Side Tattoo Studio</a> at the time this was done.<br /><br />In that original email from Grandma Diane (my mom), she also included the tattoos of Travis, Ulu's husband.<br /><br />I had never met Travis before, but was welcomed by him as one of the family. The Tattooed Poets Project: Eboni Hogan

Stevie's Tattoo Calms and Inspires

Last Wednesday marked the official end to the veritable tattoo drought this winter in New York has afforded us here on Tattoosday.<br /><br />In addition to the three people I met at lunch, my train ride home and, subsequently, my day, was punctuated by a fleeting encounter with a woman named Stevie on the R train.<br /><br />I had just plopped down in one of the seats after having moved car-to-car between stops, in an effort to get toward the back of the train. Stevie worked over several sessions with Virginia, ironing out the details of the piece, which was completed in one sitting.<br /><br />There are three elements to the tattoo: the lotus, the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hamsa">hamsa</a>, and the peacock feathers.<br /><br />Via e-mail, Stevie explained:<br /><br /><span style="font-style: italic;"></span><br /><blockquote><span style="font-style: italic;">I moved out here from the West Coast to teach in inner-city schools. When I first started teaching and things would get nerve-wracking I'd tap on this hamsa hand necklace I always wore. For whatever reason it calmed me down and reminded me that I was here to infuse some change and to do some awesome work. When I became an NYC Public School teacher I decided I'd like it on me permanently. The hamsa hand is a symbol of faith and clarity and that's what I think I found in myself, like my calling. Two Feathers, Their Story Still Untold

Several weeks ago, near the corner of 86th Street and 5th Avenue in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, I passed a couple sitting at a bus stop.<br /><br />The woman had some words inked on her left arm and, as I paused to consider talking to her, I noticed a colorful tattoo peeking out from under the man's left shirt sleeve.<br /><br />I told them about Tattoosday and the woman indicated that she had tattoos as well, but she would have to take her clothes off in order for someone to see them. I had been watching the B63 bus slowly approaching from several blocks away and, no sooner had I snapped the photos, the bus crossed 86th Street and pulled up to the stop.<br /><br />I handed him a flier and asked him to please e-mail me so I could finish interviewing him. But he never did. Oh well. If only I had been carrying a Metrocard, I could have boarded the B63 with them and talked with them briefly on the bus.<br /><br />At least we have the photo of the cool tattoo to appreciate and hopefully, some day, our paths will cross again.<br /><br />The moral of the story: shoot first and ask questions later. Also, always carry a metrocard!

Magdalena's Peacock Struts Through Penn Station
