Caitlin Shares an Undersea Cover Up

Back in July, I attended the 2nd Annual <a href="http://poetrysocietyny.org/new-york-city-poetry-festival/info-for-this-year/">New York City Poetry Festival</a> on <a href="http://www.govisland.com/html/home/home.shtml">Governor's Island</a>. Not only did I meet some great tattooed poets, I met a lot of other folks too. "I had a really janky tattoo of a star back there," she said, "that's where the starfish is." <div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">Call them what you will, what I will go with is “Orphans”.</span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 12pt;"><br /></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">I have a handful of posts that have lingered “on deck,” so to speak, that are, by themselves, sad little bits that were never completed, or, for whatever reason, didn’t pass muster with Tattoosday’s editorial board.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 12pt;"><br /></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">However, by packaging them together, I can cross them off my list once and for all, and move on. There comes a time, however,  when I’m going to have to assume that it’s fallen by the wayside, and move on. At the time, she was accompanied by two other people, one whose name was Damion. But, Damion informed me, Carlos passed away. It’s not so easy to have another artist finish the work of a deceased tattooist. Damion’s not the only one who was so affected, as you might imagine. Chris was travelling and he “likes octopi,” recognizing that, “as far as invertebrates go, [they are] probably the most intelligent of them.”</span><br /><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: 12pt;"></span></span><br />In a weird twist of this orphan post, the Tatudharma web site indicates that the shop is closed permanently, a result of it having been firebombed last April. Something Girly This Way Comes

Shaina's Back Piece Blooms

A post-work errand had me walking down 6th Avenue to 23rd Street where, to my delight, I ran into Shaina, whose large back piece stopped me dead in my tracks. Shaina explained that, at six feet tall, her size can sometimes take the edge off of her feminine side. When her grandmother passed away, she added a memorial line for her ("In Loving Memory of Eleanor Vespie) along with the red carnations, which were her favorite flowers.<br /><br />She later added the additional memorial on her neck, for her cousin Tasha.<br /><br />The tattoo was created by <a href="http://www.myspace.com/cliff_evans">Cliff Evans</a> at <a href="http://www.hellhoundmusic.com/fuzionink/">Fuzion Ink</a> in Norfolk, Virginia.<br /><br />Of course, I had to ask about the tattoo she covered up. Shaina looked at me, and I'll give her points for honesty, she confessed, the original tattoo had been a portrait of the Icelandic singer <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bj%C3%B6rk">Björk</a>.<br /><br />She looked at me. I looked at her. "Don't take this the wrong way," I cautioned her, but what would possess you to do that?" Shaina had good humor about it. Like a lot of eighteen-year olds, what seemed cool at the time, in retrospect seemed ill-chosen. Tammy says that, within an hour of meeting her, Steve Gagliano of <a href="http://www.tormentedsoulstattoo.com/main.html">Tormented Souls</a> in Kings Park, New York, knew exactly what to do with the tattoo she wanted covered up. Sasha's Cranes

The birds in the design are <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crane_%28bird%29">cranes</a>, which have immense cultural and mythological significance. Among other valuable characteristics, cranes symbolize honor and loyalty.<br /><br />This is one of "at least eight" tattoos that Sasha has. The tattoo was inked by Maya at <a href="http://www.facebook.com/home.php#%21/pages/Brooklyn-NY/Third-Eye-Tattoo/207106449186?ref=ts&ajaxpipe=1&__a=7">Third Eye Tattoo</a> in Park Slope, Brooklyn. Tattoosday Goes To Hawai'i - All in the Family, Part 5 (Ulu's Amazing Plumage)

Then, last month, I was in Hawai'i, at the home of Ulu and her husband Travis.<br /><br />For the record, despite my inkspotting ways, I was never sure if I'd have the opportunity on this trip to document all my nieces' and nephews' ink. I knew I'd be seeing them, but my purpose for doing so was not tattoo-related.<br /><br />But as you may have read over the last week, there I was at Ulu and Travis's place, hanging out with family, and the subject turned inky, and out came the camera.<br /><br />Still, I wasn't sure I would be seeing the tattoo from my mom's photo - Ulu was wearing a dress and I'm always walking on eggshells when it comes to lower back tattoos. But I was taking pictures of everyone else's tattoos and Ulu's back piece was mentioned. The original piece is covered by the eye of the peacock feather.<br /><br />The artist responsible for this incredible tattoo is <a href="http://www.myspace.com/libratat2">Libra</a>, who freelances in Hawai'i, but occasionally does guest spots at <a href="http://www.myspace.com/808tattoohawaii">808 Tattoo</a>, and was at <a href="http://www.eastsidetattoostudio.com/artists.html">East Side Tattoo Studio</a> at the time this was done.<br /><br />In that original email from Grandma Diane (my mom), she also included the tattoos of Travis, Ulu's husband.<br /><br />I had never met Travis before, but was welcomed by him as one of the family. In December 2008, we posted about our friend Paul getting some cover-up work done on his upper right arm. Tattoorism: Kelly's Backpiece for Her Daughters

Chris explained to me that, when he was seventeen, his father took him to get a tattoo. He got a piece on the left side of his back. He recalls his mother being beside herself over this, upset that he had gotten a tattoo at such an early age.<br /><br />You can tell from the photo that, on the left side, one of the wings is covering the previous tattoo. The central figure is the religious icon from Mexico <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Our_Lady_of_Guadalupe">Our Lady of Guadalupe</a>.<br /><br />Not only is it a spiritual tribute, but it is a practical one in that it is covering up the tattoo that Chris so vividly recalls upsetting his mother.<br /><br />This grand design has been a work in progress for three and a half years. Renee at Memphis Tattoo has been the artist working on the piece. 3rd Avenue Festival, Bay Ridge, Part 6

This was inked about five years ago by <a href="http://www.bodyartstudios.com/peter.htm">Peter</a> at <a href="http://www.bodyartstudios.com/">Body Art Studios</a>, whose work appeared previously <a href="http://tattoosday.blogspot.com/2007/10/3rd-avenue-festival-bay-ridge.html">here</a> on Tattoosday, and can also be seen at the bottom of the page in the form of the cherub playing the green guitar.<br /><br />What makes this piece particularly interesting is that it is a cover up, the first to appear (as far as I know) on Tattoosday.<br /><br />When Tracey was 17, she got a wizard tattooed on her back. At first glance, you really couldn't tell and, one might argue, if she didn't disclose it was a cover up, it might not be even remotely visible. As it is, I think I see where the wizard was.<br /><br />Tracy said that the tattoo was very similar to that of a woman she knew who had survived breast cancer. She had some scarring, and had a similar tattoo, which Tracey admired. This piece was inspired by this woman, and carries with it an extra meaning, as a result.<br /><br />Seems appropriate, then, that this post was written and posted on <a href="http://www.denimday.com/">Lee National Denim Day</a>, one of the nation's largest fund raisers for the <a href="http://cms.komen.org/komen/index.htm">Susan G.
