Lauren Shares Two Tattoos with a Literary Feel

Kristina Shares Two Stunning Virginia Elwood Tattoos

Remembering Julien's Father

Julien was only seven years old when his father died.<br /><br />This wonderful portrait was inked by the always-amazing <a href="http://www.virginiaelwood.com/">Virginia Elwood</a> at <a href="http://www.nyadorned.com/">New York Adorned</a>.<br /><br />Via e-mail, Julien explained the name at the top of the portrait:<br /><blockquote class="tr_bq"><span style="color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">"I actually chose my last name rather than my father's name because I got the tattoo done a few months after my grandfather (father of my father) past away, this way paid homage to both of them, and honor my family name at the same time. The Story Behind Teddy Roosevelt and the Bear in a Wheelchair

And, your eyes are not deceiving you, that's <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theodore_Roosevelt">Theodore Roosevelt</a> and a bear cub in a wheelchair.<br /><br />The million dollar question, of course, was "Why do you have Theodore Roosevelt on your leg?" Emma replied:<br /><blockquote class="tr_bq">"The short answer is that I think that he was super bad-ass and he's my favorite president. The long answer is that it came from a long decision process - I was gonna get <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stephen_Hawking">Stephen Hawking</a> and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fdr">F.D.R,</a> one on either calves, in wheelchairs, so then they could go for walks together and then I realized that that was just absolutely stupid. So I wanted to keep the wheelchair because I really like the way wheelchairs look and I decided instead of FDR, that I'd choose Teddy because he's my favorite president. And then I stuck the bear in the wheelchair so they could be friends because of all of his [Roosevelt's] naturalism...".</blockquote><span style="background-color: white;">An interesting, well-thought out response, but certainly unusual. In fact, the artist, <a href="http://www.virginiaelwood.com/">Virginia Elwood</a> at <a href="http://www.nyadorned.com/#bg=h">New York Adorned</a>, posted this on her website <a href="http://www.virginiaelwood.com/2009/06/whats-the-weirdest-tattoo-youve-ever-done/">here</a>, under the heading, <i>What's the Weirdest Tattoo You've Ever Done? </i>As Virginia says in her post, "this was her first tattoo and she sat like a champ. Two Peacocks for a Tuesday

Back in June, I met two women on separate days who had peacock tattoos.<br /><br />First was <a href="http://www.jacktarfilms.com/">Charlotte</a>, a filmmaker who I spotted on the uptown 3 train. Kerry Unveils Some Masterpieces

A couple weeks ago, I felt like I had won the Tattoosday lottery. In my own neighborhood, I ran into Kerry, who had a bit of a tattoo peeking out of her left sleeve. I stopped her and introduced myself, and she shared some simply phenomenal work. Nicole Takes Us to Candyland

At the beginning of the month, I had the pleasure of encountering a young lady named Nicole in Herald Square (34th Street and 6th Avenue, for you out-of-towners).<br /><br />Nicole is heavily inked, estimating that "about 45%" of her body is tattooed.<br /><br />So with so much work, where to begin? She offered up her lower left leg, which is fully-sleeved.<br /><br />I always find photographing sleeves challenging, because it is so hard to capture all of the details accurately and perfectly in a photograph. Emily's Typewriter

Last week, on Eighth Avenue, I spotted an incredible tattoo on the back of a woman's calf and knew that I had to speak to her about it. You can click the tag at the bottom of the post to see other work of Virginia's that I have been fortunate enough to spot in my Tattoosday travels.<br /><br />Emily explained that she is a writer, and wanted a vintage typewriter inked to represent her vocation. My guess she had decided on one of these <a href="http://www.machinesoflovinggrace.com/royals.htm">Royal</a> typewriters, and then Virginia worked her magic. [Virginia] was like <i>It'll be too small if I put it on your arm, we'll have to do a big one to get the best detail</i>."</blockquote>The rest, as they say, is history.<br /><br />Emily has nine tattoos in all, counting a half-sleeve as one large piece, and all of her work has been done by Virginia.<br /><br />Emily is managing editor for a website called <a href="http://www.xojane.com/">xoJane</a>, and has even written about her tattoos. She directed me to <a href="http://www.stumbleupon.com/su/2ABM4y/www.xojane.com/sex/my-tattoos-make-guys-think-im-easy">this article</a> she recently wrote, called "<a href="http://www.stumbleupon.com/su/2ABM4y/www.xojane.com/sex/my-tattoos-make-guys-think-im-easy">My Tattoos Make Guys Think I'm Easy</a>." She's got a smart style that really taps into the heart and soul of the subject. I'm sure many tattooed women can relate to the sentiment in that piece. She also pointed to a <a href="http://www.xojane.com/entertainment/ny-ink-megan-massacre-sexism">more current article</a> she wrote, with some input from Virginia, as well, about <a href="http://www.xojane.com/entertainment/ny-ink-megan-massacre-sexism">sexism in tattoo shops</a>, specifically with the drama in the premiere (and subsequent episodes) of the latest tattoo reality series, <a href="http://tlc.howstuffworks.com/tv/ny-ink"><i>New York Ink</i></a>.<br /><br />I, for one, certainly recommend checking out Emily's site, <a href="http://www.xojane.com/">xoJane</a>, and exploring not only her contributions, but those of the other writers, as well.<br /><br />Thanks to Emily for sharing her incredible work with us here on Tattoosday, and for talking with me, even though she was running late. Virginia in incredibly talented, and seems to especially excel at bird tattoos (her work has been seen previously on Tattoosday <a href="http://tattoosday.blogspot.com/2010/08/kristinas-rooster-crows-in-honor-of-her.html">here</a>, <a href="http://tattoosday.blogspot.com/2010/03/stevies-tattoo-calms-and-inspires.html">here</a> and <a href="http://tattoosday.blogspot.com/2011/02/melanies-marilyn.html">here</a>).</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal">Tova explained that she loves birds, and that this mockingbird reflects a turn of events that occurred in Southern California. She described to me how, the night before she had to take <strike>defend</strike>  her Ph.D. exams <strike>dissertation</strike>, her husband had a guest staying with them, and this individual seemed particular insensitive to the momentous occasion Tova was facing the next day, as he was playing loud music well into the night.</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal">Tova recalled how her anxiety and displeasure over this guest’s inconsiderate activity forced her from her home in search of a little peace and quiet. As she circled her block, she was struck by the large number of mockingbirds that were flying around.</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal">She successfully passed her exams <strike>defended her dissertation</strike> and associates the mockingbird with this landmark event in her life.</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal">As her Ph.D. Is in English, I asked her if she was familiar with one of my favorite poems, Charles Bukowski’s “The Mockingbird”. A trip to the laundromat on Saturday yielded a meeting with a young lady who had a couple visible tattoos on one of her feet and an ankle. Stacy's Amigo Tugs Her Back to Milwaukee

Under One Small Star - Two Tattoos from Anna

I met Anna earlier this month in Penn Station. Her group leader, Jan, had shared the poem, "Under One Small Star" by Polish <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nobel_Prize_in_Literature">Nobel Laureate</a> <a href="http://www.culture.pl/web/english/resources-literature-full-page/-/eo_event_asset_publisher/eAN5/content/wislawa-szymborska">Wislawa Szymborska</a>, and the verse meant a lot to her during her trip there. Claire's Hemaris Thysbe Flutters on Her Forearm

Butterfly tattoos can be a dime a dozen (no offense, butterfly fans), but moths, on the other hand often get a bum rap, taking a back seat to their more flamboyant insect cousins. He alluded to the roots that spread out, firmly symbolizing family.<br /><br />Brian also explained that it was an investigation piece: he added a key, hanging from a branch. Kristina's Rooster Crows in Honor of Her Son

Belinda's Penny-Farthing

This design is of the "high wheel bicycle" that was introduced in the late 19th century and is more commonly referred to as the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penny-farthing">penny-farthing</a>. She told me that this was a much more efficient bicycle than had been seen before. The larger wheel allowed it to travel better, although the falls from a much greater height were a problem.<br /><br />Belinda added,<br /><br /><blockquote>"The purpose of the pilgrimage was not religious but more a curiosity to see this path (<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Way_of_St._James">the Way of St. James</a>) that people have been taking for hundreds and hundreds of years just because of faith. I felt it was a great way to see the real "Spain" by riding through the small villages and woods...we ended in <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Santiago_de_Compostela">Santiago de Compostela</a>..."</blockquote>This tattoo was inked by one of the artists at <a href="http://www.nyadorned.com/">NY Adorned</a>. Stevie's Tattoo Calms and Inspires

Last Wednesday marked the official end to the veritable tattoo drought this winter in New York has afforded us here on Tattoosday.<br /><br />In addition to the three people I met at lunch, my train ride home and, subsequently, my day, was punctuated by a fleeting encounter with a woman named Stevie on the R train.<br /><br />I had just plopped down in one of the seats after having moved car-to-car between stops, in an effort to get toward the back of the train. Stevie worked over several sessions with Virginia, ironing out the details of the piece, which was completed in one sitting.<br /><br />There are three elements to the tattoo: the lotus, the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hamsa">hamsa</a>, and the peacock feathers.<br /><br />Via e-mail, Stevie explained:<br /><br /><span style="font-style: italic;"></span><br /><blockquote><span style="font-style: italic;">I moved out here from the West Coast to teach in inner-city schools. When I first started teaching and things would get nerve-wracking I'd tap on this hamsa hand necklace I always wore. For whatever reason it calmed me down and reminded me that I was here to infuse some change and to do some awesome work. When I became an NYC Public School teacher I decided I'd like it on me permanently. The hamsa hand is a symbol of faith and clarity and that's what I think I found in myself, like my calling. Elizabeth's Alphabetical Ink

Imagine me in Penn Station. I see a woman with a small letter tattooed on her. Interesting. Then I notice that she has them everywhere, in no apparent order, on her legs, on her arms, on the back of her neck. Not something you see every day. I had to ask her about them, and Elizabeth was kind to indulge my curiosity.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.ihearttype.com/">Elizabeth</a> is a typographer, by profession, and she works with letters as part of her trade. Whatever letters she was working on at the time, she would have inked. In other words, she'd head into <a href="http://nyadorned.com/">New York Adorned</a> for her appointment with <a href="http://stephanietamez.com/">Stephanie Tamez</a>, and whatever was at the forefront of her consciousness, that's what she had tattooed.<br /><br />I was familiar with Stephanie Tamez for, most recently, <a href="http://tattoosday.blogspot.com/2009/04/eileen-myles-poet-take-my-measure.html">this tattoo</a> on the writer <span style="text-decoration: underline;"></span><a href="http://www.eileenmyles.com/home.html">Eileen Myles</a>. So I sent Stephanie an email and asked her to comment on this particular twenty-six part tattoo.<br /><br />Stephanie wrote:<br /><br /><blockquote>"I...remember the alphabet on Elizabeth, she is sweet and lovely as well. As you may or may not know I have had a reputation for tattooing many a letter, many a word, many a sentence and many a paragraph. I bet I have in all filled a few novels. Ha. Anyway from what I can recall with Elizabeth, it was very simple and fun and straight forward. I have done several alphabets throughout the years on mostly graphic designers who are captivated by fonts. I have done words on graphic designers from France to Mexico and done many a word on many a writer. I wish I could remember them all and had been logging all their tales..."</blockquote><br />Elizabeth had also mentioned to me that she was meeting with <a href="http://www.bodytypebook.com/">Ina Saltz</a>, an art director, designer, writer, photographer and professor at <a href="http://www1.ccny.cuny.edu/">City College of New York</a>. Unbeknownst to me at the time, Ms. Saltz had written a book called <a href="https://www.amazon.com/dp/0810970503?tag=bill03-20&camp=0&creative=0&linkCode=as1&creativeASIN=0810970503&adid=12T728898D9Q8RHAGYMP&">Body Type</a>, which is a study of typographic tattoos.<br /><br />Having since read the book (highly recommended to all), I related to Ms. Saltz's quest, that began with a chance spotting of a word tattoo on a crosstown bus several years ago. Of course, I have featured <a href="http://tattoosday.blogspot.com/search/label/Words">numerous word tattoos</a> over the past couple of years, but <u>Body Type's</u> chronicling of the vast array of typographic tattoos is certainly entertaining to anyone who appreciates the art. In fact, Ms. Saltz goes out of her way to acknowledge Stephanie Tamez as one of the premier word tattooists. In all fairness to Ms. Tamez, one look at <a href="http://www.blogger.com/stephanietamez.wordpress.com">her website</a> will reveal that, although she is acknowledged as a skilled tattooer of words, her skills and artistry go far beyond the inking of letters!<br /><br />Anyway, back to Elizabeth, who followed up our encounter with an e-mail discussing the font she used for her tattoos, but also with (per my request) an alphabetical catalog of all her letters:<br /><blockquote><br />My tattoos are in <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Garamond">Garamond</a> (for the real font nerds out there, it's a few different cuts, mostly Garamond 3 and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stempel">Stempel</a> Garamond, a couple are in <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adobe_Systems">Adobe</a> Garamond). I'm a typographer and I've always loved Garamond — the first Roman font to be used on <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johannes_Gutenberg">Gutenberg's</a> press. The typeface has been in existence since 1530, and still embodies so much of what we perceive as 'perfect' in letterforms today. Yes, they're all in lower case. No plans for capitals, or punctuation...no plans for any more tattoos, in fact.<br /><br />Below is the catalog of letters. although I will say I didn't get them in alphabetical order, and I got them slowly over a few years.
