Steve's Sleeve and the Narrative Behind It

<div class="tr_bq">Earlier this month, I was in the Fort Greene section of Brooklyn for a mixer for <a href="http://www.brooklyncrescents.com/">The Brooklyn Crescents</a> lacrosse program.</div><br />The event was held at <a href="http://www.ex49.com/dsk/">Der Schwarze Kolner</a>, a beer garden that offered up some tasty beverages. Over the course of the evening, I noticed one of the employees who was diligently passing out frosty steins to patrons. So I definitely thought about it for a long while. It was originally inspired by a <a href="http://www.banksy.co.uk/">Bansky</a> stencil in which a woman in a dress is shooting herself in the head. From this bloody mess emerges a number of butterflies. Interpret what you will... I took this to mean rebirth after death and the cleansing properties of fire. I had studied medieval alchemy heavily as a graduate student, and this symbolism of death and rebirth through flame resonated with me greatly. Plus, I know that each of us has a fiery  self-destructive side and I am no exception. I wanted to honor that side of myself and also to silently pay homage to those friends over the years that I have lost to suicide.<br /> <br />So working closely with Joy Rumore at <a href="http://www.1228tattoo.com/">Twelve 28 Tattoo</a> in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, we designed the upper sleeve [that] would show a woman, slightly cartoon-like and pin-up styled, holding a gun to her head. Rather than a bloody mess like in the stencil, I wanted her face to be content and pretty. Her hair burns red and orange like the fire elemental she is. From the gun, which has been fired, emerges stars and smoke. From the smoke, moving down the sleeve, emerges a spiral galaxy and more stars in negative space. Fire blows from the top of the retort, and a <a href="http://www.mariowiki.com/Mushroom">1up Mario Mushroom</a> [visible in the top photo at the bottom of the sleeve, near the wrist], the one overt pop-culture reference on my arm, comes forth again illustrating rebirth and 'extra' life after death. Other features of the sleeve are the bullet casing, which is haloed inside my elbow pit, and the final black star on the inside of my wrist, which has the alchemical symbol for <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercury_(element)">Mercury</a> within. Mercury is the activator, the 'invisible, secretly working fire' of the purification process. Lastly, the Latin words MUNDUS VULT DECIPI are inscribed on my arm. They translate to 'the world wishes to be deceived.' I agree with this saying, attributed to the Roman <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Petronius">Petronius</a> (1st c. AD), as many individuals live life 'asleep.' Only though the fire can one truly awake into a higher self.</blockquote><blockquote>Still, despite the short novel of meaning I find and imbue into this tattoo, overall it is a beautiful piece of art and I couldn't be happier with Joy's work. She was very patient with me as we completed the piece over the course of three years! Money ran tight at times and our schedules conflicted, but in truth the time allowed for us to work together and for the tattoo to organically take shape. For instance, the bottom sleeve was not designed at all when we began the top sleeve. I remember suggesting to Joy the idea of the 1up Mushroom blasting from the retort, only to have her laugh with enjoyment at how nicely it would bring things together. You know you have found an excellent tattoo artist when they are genuinely interested and excited to work to create a shared piece of art.</blockquote><blockquote>I guess that's my sleeve's story then. Oh, and by the way, the girl has no name and I doubt she ever will!"</blockquote>Steve's praise for Joy Rumore is not unfounded. Gatsie Shares an Undersea Half-Sleeve and Some Additional Work from Royal Street Tattoo

Back in June, I met Gatsie on the West 4th Street subway platform in Manhattan. Jasmin's Phoenix Keeps Her Grounded

As the year winds down, I am clearing out the cobwebs - a hodgepodge of posts that just didn't make the grade. What causes an encounter from May to be delayed over seven months? Several things, like, in this case, a photo that just didn't make the grade. It doubly keeps her grounded and represents her rise from the ashes.She told me she wanted the "girliest-looking phoenix," something "light and wispy".<br /><br /><br />The two phrases in the banners are "Ut prosim aliis" and "Il buon tempo".<br /><br />"Ut prosim aliis" is the motto on her family (Jennings) crest and translates to "that I may be of use to others," or, in Jasmin's words, "that I might profit others".<br /><br />She told me that "il buon tempo" meant "each new day is bright," but it is more commonly translated from the Italian as "good times".<br /><br />She credited the work of this tattoo to an artist named Zack at <a href="http://www.psychotats.com/newweb/shops/psycho2/SandySprings.htm">Psycho Tattoo 2</a> in Atlanta.<br /><br />Thanks to Jasmin for sharing this tattoo with us here on Tattoosday!<br /><br /><br /><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: x-small;">This entry is ©2011 Tattoosday. </span></div><span style="font-size: x-small;"> <span style="font-family: "Times New Roman";"><br />If you are reading this on another web site other than Tattoosday, without attribution, please note that it has been copied without the author's permission and is in violation of copyright laws. Seth's Phoenix

Yesterday's post featured a sleeve from a guy named Phoenix. Today we have a sleeve that centers around a phoenix.<br /><br />Anyone who's spent any time in New York City could tell you that bike messengers have a lot of great ink. Not all, of course, but quite a few. Fixtures in the city streets, especially in warmer months, if they're not zipping by on their bikes, you can often catch a glimpse of something cool. A Bright Spot in December: A Phoenix and a Pin-Up

As one would expect, inkspotting is tough during December. Here we are at the end of the month, and I have only interviewed three people since the 1st. This mirrors the life cycle of the mythological phoenix who dies, bound in flame, only to be reborn from the ashes. Gina's Phoenix

In late June, I ran into Gina in Penn Station and complimented her on a tattoo she had on her back. At the time, she was wearing something with straps that covered part of the design. I gave her a flier and she remarked that she had just recently discovered the site through <a href="http://tattoosday.blogspot.com/2010/06/julies-crazy-tattoo.html">this post</a> on the tattoo of Julie Powell.<br /><br />Alas, like so many folks to whom I give fliers, I didn't receive any emails or photos. Jenny's Amazing Peacock

Timing is everything when it comes to successful inkspotting. Luck is essential. The Tattooed Poets Project: Doug Anderson's Phoenix Soars

I first heard that <a href="http://www.curbstone.org/authdetail.cfm?AuthID=78">Doug Anderson</a> had an "amazing" tattoo via the poet <a href="http://www.poets.org/poet.php/prmPID/97">Marilyn Nelson</a>.<br /><br />When I saw photos of it, I knew she wasn't exaggerating. Doug went in to <a href="http://www.greenmantattoo.com/">Green Man Tattoo</a> in West Hartford, Connecticut, and met the co-owner, Jon Elliot. He did what is considered ideal for a lot of tattoo artists: he gave him a kernel of an idea and "told him to do what he wanted as long as it was a phoenix". Doug notes, "I like to let artists do that because they always do their best work that way." Agreed, and the proof is in the end result.<br /><br />The tattoo was completed in 2 two-and-a-half-hour sittings. Tattoorism: Sean Stops by To Unveil More Amazing Work

I really enjoy the traditional, old school style of tattoos and feel it’s important that this style does not disappear... from tattoo culture. Further, I always viewed these women as adventurers, constantly looking for a new journey. Especially, the woman who are looking off to the sides, almost as if into the distance, as opposed to those who look straight forward. I always envision them looking off to a new land, a new adventure, etc. This tattoo signifies my “journey” through life, especially significant due to just graduating college. It is a reminder to never stagnate and to constantly be striving for better things. So now, every time I see the tattoo it reminds me of my home and family (particularly, my mother for some reason). This was significant to me as I received that tattoo during my final years at college (the first two years I spent commuting to a community college, the last two years I spent living on campus away from home for the first time in my life). I feel this ideology also applies to human life. In order, for someone to fully mature, I feel one needs to be prepared to lose parts of oneself (whether they be thought processes, habits, etc.) in order to grow into a better-equipped and well-rounded person. The bonsai reminds me to strive for this."</blockquote><br />I once again thank Sean for not only sharing his tattoos with us here, but for putting the effort into writing a thoughtful, detailed account of the meaning of the art gracing his skin. Tani has 15 tattoos - Here's One!

I rain into Tani on <a href="http://bayridgebid.com/Shopper%27s%20Guide.htm">5th avenue in Bay Ridge</a> on Thursday. She has multiple tattoos, on her arms, peeking out from the edges of her shirt on her back, and many that were out of sight.<br /><br />She offered up this piece on her left biceps, although she admitted her favorite tattoo is on her ribs. The two main elements are the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phoenix_%28mythology%29">phoenix</a> and the tree, which she identified as a <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_maple">Japanese Maple</a>.<br /><br />People with a lot of tattoos, I have discovered, either know exactly how many they have, or aren't sure, and have to try and figure it out. When I asked Tani the inevitable question, she did not hesitate. The Phoenix and the Bulldog

Autumn has come to <a href="http://www.nyc.gov/portal/site/nycgov/?front_door=true">New York City</a>, making the mission of Tattoosday slightly more difficult. I especially like the nice touch of the three blue water droplets at the end of the hose.
