Recap of Matty No Times Fundraiser at Yes Gallery

Rather than a 1-transfer commute from South Brooklyn, the trip involved a lengthy trip on the <a href="http://www.mta.info/nyct/service/rline.htm">R train</a> which took me through Manhattan and into Queens, where a shuttle bus skirted me back to Brooklyn. Are you kidding me? But I didn't want to miss this event, not only because it was for a good cause as the NY tattoo community rallied to help one of their own, but because it would give me the chance to see some amazing art and possibly meet some of the artists behind the work. I shed my backpack and just brought my notebook, stuffed with fliers, although I didn't necessarily expect to do the Tattoosday thing at the event. But you never know, and it was a long (1 hour, 28 minutes, according to <a href="http://www.hopstop.com/">HopStop</a>) trek. Who knows who I might meet along the way? I arrived relatively early, just in time to catch <a href="http://meditationsinatrament.com/">Thomas Hooper</a> exiting the gallery. I have long admired Mr. Hooper's work (even <a href="http://meditationsinatrament.com/">his web site</a> is art) and was hoping to meet him. I introduced myself and he was soft-spoken and polite. I would have loved to chat with him further, but he was headed elsewhere and seemed to be in a hurry to go. Inside, the Yes gallery's air conditioning was a welcome relief, as I started looking at the hundred-plus works of art that had been donated by artists from all over to help <a href="http://www.threekingstattoo.com/site/">Three Kings'</a> artist <a href="http://www.threekingstattoo.com/site/artistpage.php?artistid=5&picid=449&page=1">Matty No Times</a> recover from staggering bills that resulted from an emergency liver transplant last Fall. <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNeaMWP7r8Pqs__9bGqfJKz2XRz_aIqVV7mfz5a-tPKwYVgR5JeaRNqbLAP5E45yDSicnzqIwrWWt9KZrO8y-_lSPywKTTddnMMH7A0-p41oPsUpTpFWuHVRiGPzvrTZIlLVI4D3TC/s1600/Yes+Gallery+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNeaMWP7r8Pqs__9bGqfJKz2XRz_aIqVV7mfz5a-tPKwYVgR5JeaRNqbLAP5E45yDSicnzqIwrWWt9KZrO8y-_lSPywKTTddnMMH7A0-p41oPsUpTpFWuHVRiGPzvrTZIlLVI4D3TC/s400/Yes+Gallery+1.jpg" width="300" /></a></div> I introduced myself to Matty (Mr. No Times sounds weirdly formal) and chatted briefly as he ran the table where people paid for the art, left donations, and entered the raffle. He is a very nice guy and seemed genuinely appreciative of the turnout. The list of artists who contributed their work was staggering. We chatted awhile as they made their way around the gallery. I also talked with <a href="http://www.boundforglorytattoo.com/magieserpica.html">Magie Serpica</a>, who I ran into last year at a <a href="http://www.needlesandsins.com/">Needles & Sins</a> event, and who made her own Tattoosday contribution <a href="http://tattoosday.blogspot.com/2009/10/magies-unique-sugar-skull-inked-by-big.html">here</a>. Do I look at the art on the walls? Or do I look at the amazing art on the bodies? Most folks would have assumed I would have gone hog-wild taking photos of peoples' tattoos, but remember, I tend to embrace the random encounter aspect of the Tattoosday mission, and just like one doesn't see a lot of photos from conventions and tattoo shops, I avoided interviewing people about their tattoos. It just didn't seem sporting to do so. No worries. I wasn't in a position to invest in any art, so I did my part to help raise funds for this worthy cause. Thanks to all the artists who participated and made for such a wonderful  visual experience, and to all the extended friends of Tattoosday who made the event more enjoyable for me, especially Pete and his wife Maria, who let me tag along with them at the gallery and spared me the subway after the show with a much-quicker ride home!

Mel's Star Shines from Down Under

Earlier this month, I ran into Mel coming out of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pennsylvania_Station_%28New_York_City%29">Penn Station</a>. She has amazing work, and it was soon clear why. Mel was visiting from <a href="http://www.melbourne.vic.gov.au/Pages/default.aspx">Melbourne, Australia</a>, where she works as a tattoo artist at <a href="http://www.facebook.com/pages/Oakleigh-South-Australia/Get-Smart-Body-Art-Tattooing/274500058582">Get Smart Body Art</a>. Mel noted that it was an original design that was inked using a rotary tattoo machine, with the purpose of achieving this effect. Burn My Body: Carson Honors a Difficult Decision

Our paths intersected at 23rd and 7th around Noon. He had neck work and a sleeve, and an incredible lighthouse tattooed on the back of his left leg (for his fiancée, he later explained), but I didn't think I'd catch him. He was walking faster than me, and had earbuds in. I generally don't like to a) interrupt people listening to music and, b) chase them. But I happened to be walking the same direction and, when I noticed he had stopped to look into the windows of<a href="http://chelseaguitars.com/"> Dan's Chelsea Guitars</a>, condition "b" was no longer a factor. I approached him, distracted him from his ear buds, and introduced myself. I forgave myself the interruption because his work was so well done. As I always do, when speaking with folks with multiple tattoos, I asked him which meant the most, which piece I could feature here on Tattoosday. He acknowledged that he had a chest piece which was "in progress". Did he mind showing me on the street? As the photo above indicates, not at all. Excuse my manners. I didn't introduce our host properly. The guy on the sidewalk displaying has tattoos just downstairs from the <a href="http://www.hotelchelsea.com/">Hotel Chelsea</a> was Carson James. Carson is a Brooklynite that plays bass in a band called <a href="http://www.myspace.com/tombsbklyn">Tombs </a>(click to hear some of their stuff on their MySpace page). And when he pulled his shirt off, I was expecting a great chest piece, but nothing like what scrolled across his body. He told me how, about two years ago, his younger brother, Trevor Lorne James, was killed in a motorcycle accident in New Jersey. His parents were understanably distraught over such a devastating event, and the decision fell to Carson - his brother's body was cremated. We talked about cremation and I asked if he had ever heard the poem "<a href="http://plagiarist.com/poetry/9253/">Cremation</a>" by <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robinson_Jeffers">Robinson Jeffers</a> (read it <a href="http://plagiarist.com/poetry/9253/">here</a>). I promised to e-mail it to him later. This piece, and most of Carson's work was inked by <a href="http://thomashooper.wordpress.com/">Thomas Hooper</a>, an incredible tattooer who worked out of <a href="http://www.frithstreettattoo.co.uk/">Frith Street Tattoo and Piercing</a> in London, and now works out of <a href="http://www.nyadorned.com/">New York Adorned's</a> Brooklyn shop. His right arm is sleeved with a depiction of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samuel_Taylor_Coleridge">Samuel Taylor Coleridge's</a> "<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Rime_of_the_Ancient_Mariner">The Rime of the Ancient Mariner</a>" and, as mentioned earlier, the lighthouse is for his fiancée. It should also be noted that this is another first for Tattoosday, as Carson is the host here whose face is visible in a tattoo shot.
