But, every once in a while, I see an exceptional one, and feel compelled to share it here.<br /><br />The photo above is of a stunning koi tattoo, courtesy of a guy named Chris, who I met last week at the <a href="http://www.nyctattooconvention.com/">NYC Tattoo Convention</a>.<br /><br />It's an exceptionally well-done piece, with the traditional Japanese carp, or <i>koi</i>, swimming upstream, along with a lotus flower at the bottom and cherry blossoms at the top. Note also the way water and movement is skillfully represented.<br /><br />Chris credited <a href="http://jeremymillertattoo.com/about/">Jeremy Miller</a> from <a href="https://www.facebook.com/screaminink">Screamin' Ink Tattoo</a> in Fair Lawn, New Jersey. Is it a museum on my arm? Is it some kind of message from outerspace? Children run to me just to touch it: ask me what the words mean, what I'm trying to spell. There are no words, only water.<br /><br />For many years, I had been thinking about getting matching tattoos of waves splashing up my calves to my knees, as if I were wading in the ocean, perpetually. I thought about the cost, I thought about how the tattoos would look with a miniskirt -- I realized that if I got them, I'd always want to be wearing jeans rolled up to my knees and salt-stained t-shirt. I can't carry seashells all the time in my pockets, I can't be brushing the sand out of my hair every five minutes. So I decided to take less of a plunge, enter the water one arm at a time. It started off quite slow. <span style="font-style: italic;">Are you sure you don't want a fish</span>, the artist kept asking me as we mapped out my image on tracing paper. Everybody else gets a fish. <span style="font-style: italic;">Just water</span>, I said, <span style="font-style: italic;">just waves</span>. The tattoo was to celebrate --- some kind of new awakening, finally going back to grad school to get my PhD in Lit like I always wanted, finally believing I could achieve something more. The waves are Asian-inspired; many who see my arm mention <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hokusai">Hokusai</a>, but the water is not taken directly from him. I was thinking of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zen">Zen</a> when I finally decided on these particular waves; I was thinking that if I could just be in the water, neither sinking nor floating above, if I could just be. Water has always suggested to me some kind of slower, purer imitation of our world, something more real and less sharp. Not just amniotic fluid, not just rain, but the color, the there-not there texture, the kiss of it."</blockquote></div>And that explanation, my friends, is one of the many reasons I love the Tattooed Poets Project.<br /><br />She credits the work to <a href="http://www.finelinetattoo.com/staff/">Mike Bakaty</a> at <a href="http://www.finelinetattoo.com/">Fineline Tattoo NYC</a> on 1st Avenue in Manhattan, who inked this about three years ago.<br /><br />Christine is a PhD candidate in English  Literature<span style="font-style: italic;">,</span> teaches at <a href="http://www.cuny.edu/index.html">CUNY</a> in New York City, and was runner-up to the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queens">Queens</a> Poet Laureate.  Her second book of poetry, <span style="font-style: italic;"><a href="http://www.plainviewpress.net/gallery2/pages/Saints-&-Cannibals.htm">Saints & Cannibals</a>, </span>is coming out this spring. J.R.'s Five Elements

At the end of August, I spent a couple of minutes on the R train with J.R., who has quite a few tattoos. I didn't have time to take notes, just photos, and I hoped that she would e-mail me with all the details of her work. Fortunately, she did. So, what follows is her explanation of the tattoos, with a little bit of friendly editing.<br /><blockquote><br /><div>"My left arm? Dedicated to the five elements...as I see them to be. They have no real strength individually, but together can achieve so much. As a human, I feel it is destined to feel lonely and when I got the tattoo, I came to terms with that and even found beauty in it. I want to feel less like an ant in the sense that there is something that I'm "supposed" to do and if I don't do it I'll be punished or kicked out of the colony, so to say. I feel the lyrics of the song so deeply and feel that they express such a core sense of who I am. Always, trying to be free. I aspire to someday be free instead of always trying and the tattoo is an attempt to remind myself that the feeling of trying is also a choice just as easy as the feeling of being free is a choice. Cancer is ruled by the moon and your moon signs make up your emotional nature. So, I feel this sign very strongly and luckily balances my <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leo_%28astrology%29">Leo</a> sun sign which I will get to more later. The symbol has stars instead of circles like a traditional yin yang because I wanted it to represent the universe within myself versus me questioning the universe around me. I got the box around it to express the feeling of being limited due to the human mind. I wanted to remind myself that any limitations are just an illusion and the healthy balance is one in which I'm learning from my experiences but also pushing my own boundaries.</div><div><br /></div><div>The red and orange tattoo on my outer arm was done by the same forgotten artist though I will mention I was one of her first clients and that she was the perfect person for the job due to her own self-exploratory nature. It captures my before mentioned fire sign of Leo, which is ruled by the sun. It is also Buddhist themed using a Tibetan mantra <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Om_mani_padme_hum">Om Mani Padme Hum</a> which roughly translates to "the jewel is in the lotus,"  which to me is a beautiful way to live life. The lotus roots reach far into the muck and swamp but emerge with a beautiful flower on top. The tattoo is an attempt to capture the notion of living in the world yet being separate from it, as to not get burned or be consumed by it.
