The Tattooed Poets Project: Josh Fernandez

Our next tattooed poet is <a href="http://www.josh-fernandez.com/">Josh Fernandez</a>, who estimates he is about 40% covered. "At this rate," he says, "I'll probably end up with just my natural face and the rest covered in ink." I am grateful to the poet <a href="http://www.timkahl.com/">Tim Kahl</a>, who is un-inked, for sending me Josh's way.<br /><br />I'll let Josh explain his work:<br /><blockquote class="tr_bq">"It took a long time to cast aside my lust for drugs that seemed to plague me all the way up until my 30s. Even then, it wasn't until I began writing for publications that I realized I actually had a purpose and a shot at life.</blockquote><blockquote class="tr_bq">After burning out on journalism, I began teaching writing at a community college. It’s a career job, something I've never had before. In retrospect, I guess journalism was almost a real job, but it’s the clown car of professions, packed to the brim with wacky but ultimately depressing characters (addicts, sociopaths, egomaniacs, loudmouths, etc.). I fit in quite well. Teaching, however, is a different world entirely. For the most part, you need to be a professional, which, to be honest, I don’t even know what that means. I’m not sure where I fit.<br /><br />While I’m no longer a drug-addled wanderer, I still consider myself unprofessional—still kind of a fuckup. I suppose I tattooed my body to keep myself separated from the non-fuckups. On my fingers are the words “OUT OF STEP” with a picture of a little black sheep (<a href="https://www.facebook.com/pages/Royal-Peacock-Tattoo-Parlor/157554380944064">Royal Peacock</a>, Sacramento, CA)...</blockquote><blockquote class="tr_bq"><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgo8hw5ZDGb3cIX7dZgIDqsJfJPKX0QNRbUN3M-usMFgCPpzTILP1XFgjv4Jx1RF0bARW8eiWermcbaJJVDuwVammhWPWP2IueB_aLMXSIcPshgXCci_H4XDyImYRybr0ctJqxN4GJF3ow/s615/Minor+Threat.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgo8hw5ZDGb3cIX7dZgIDqsJfJPKX0QNRbUN3M-usMFgCPpzTILP1XFgjv4Jx1RF0bARW8eiWermcbaJJVDuwVammhWPWP2IueB_aLMXSIcPshgXCci_H4XDyImYRybr0ctJqxN4GJF3ow/s320/Minor+Threat.png" width="239" /></a></div></blockquote><blockquote class="tr_bq">... a tribute to the hardcore band <a href="http://minorthreat.com/">Minor Threat</a>—an indicator of my place in society. </blockquote><blockquote class="tr_bq">On my hand is a cartoon version of my cat Loki, the chief of our house (<a href="http://www.vermininkandpaint.com/">Char Hall</a>, <a href="https://www.facebook.com/SideShowStudiosFan">Sideshow Studios</a>, Sacramento, CA):</blockquote><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3jYo-7NXhXGom4QGLv8quY1yUhhT69LmmBGNRCcV5md6oIuKepf7KOc_sTeD0BaN59TCeynASYKFwkp7MDnQvaobBGC6ZbcuCktSvfVk7IzCsB7oh3Y0g0LrCWot6JpZ_Anr4s-KFjxE/s615/Loki.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3jYo-7NXhXGom4QGLv8quY1yUhhT69LmmBGNRCcV5md6oIuKepf7KOc_sTeD0BaN59TCeynASYKFwkp7MDnQvaobBGC6ZbcuCktSvfVk7IzCsB7oh3Y0g0LrCWot6JpZ_Anr4s-KFjxE/s640/Loki.png" width="542" /></a></div><blockquote class="tr_bq">On my inner calf is a portrait of <a href="http://www.poets.org/poet.php/prmPID/155">Emily Dickinson</a> (<a href="http://www.capitalinktattoo.com/beau-mccoy.html">Beau McCoy</a>, <a href="http://www.capitalinktattoo.com/">Capital Ink Tattoo</a>, Sacramento, CA), a fearless writer who I believe to be one of the original punk rockers.</blockquote><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXTVUNIh8Km8fC060hiKBthRfnBoKwU0EWYEm_tjIDX3tm9KNhttw14cOzwTwIS0isSJgcRrIp6cCxWswYqFyJ4zDrID-yFVl-2avb4q1Vq-hvVgwpk8BnTXJw064pPWY-QAS7ktop2Ck/s615/Dickinson.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXTVUNIh8Km8fC060hiKBthRfnBoKwU0EWYEm_tjIDX3tm9KNhttw14cOzwTwIS0isSJgcRrIp6cCxWswYqFyJ4zDrID-yFVl-2avb4q1Vq-hvVgwpk8BnTXJw064pPWY-QAS7ktop2Ck/s640/Dickinson.png" width="390" /></a></div><blockquote class="tr_bq">And on my forearm is a typewriter (<a href="http://www.tattoo13oakland.com/">Lucky 13</a>, Oakland, CA), a reminder that I have approximately one skill.</blockquote><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhv9MRAQlLU4dWfSDXrVJKh4yqv4I1UJQ07tjTHF58iDnHvdw8_f3s_kGkeZoVK4oIKcVRsD6KK-WaYBUcv1XCX1U4buh4p4unXWfsQNToQqGC2ST2TKDyFieu8ZZEOlFHm_F9Q_kf4gI/s615/Typewriter.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhv9MRAQlLU4dWfSDXrVJKh4yqv4I1UJQ07tjTHF58iDnHvdw8_f3s_kGkeZoVK4oIKcVRsD6KK-WaYBUcv1XCX1U4buh4p4unXWfsQNToQqGC2ST2TKDyFieu8ZZEOlFHm_F9Q_kf4gI/s400/Typewriter.png" width="280" /></a></div><br />It's not often we get to share tattoos inspired by Emily Dickinson and a punk rock band in the same breath, so we were happy to post everything Josh sent our way.<br /><br />Josh also sent us several poems and I picked two.<br /><br /><b>The Addict</b><br /><br />He takes root<br />—feet, planted<br />firmly in the soil , kneeling<br />against the Earth,<br />banging until his fists<br />bloom<br />into tulips.<br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;">~ ~ ~</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div>I really liked this longer poem, which appeared originally in <i><a href="http://www.blogger.com/%3Ca%20href=%22http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0972295852/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=0972295852&linkCode=as2&tag=bill03-20%22%3ESpare%20Parts%20and%20Dismemberment%3C/a%3E%3Cimg%20src=%22http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=bill03-20&l=as2&o=1&a=0972295852%22%20width=%221%22%20height=%221%22%20border=%220%22%20alt=%22%22%20style=%22border:none%20!important;%20margin:0px%20!important;%22%20/%3E">Spare Parts and Dismemberment</a> (</i><a href="http://rlcrow.com/">R.L. The Tattooed Poets Project: Jo Langton

Say what you will about the Tattooed Poets Project, but it has been dominated by Americans these past four years. Unless I'm forgetting someone, we've only had one poet featured from outside the U.S., and that was <a href="http://www.readthismagazine.co.uk/onenightstanzas/?page_id=2">Claire Askew</a>, whose ink appeared back in 2009 <a href="http://tattoosday.blogspot.com/2009/04/claire-askews-two-naomis.html">here</a>.<br /><br />Well, this year we are expanding a bit more, including a few more poets that reside outside of the States, and our first such shining example is Jo Langton.<br /><br />Jo is sharing two tattoos, both of which were done by artists at <a href="http://www.afflecks.com/">Affleck’s Palace</a>, in Manchester UK. She doesn't remember the artists' names and explains,<br /><blockquote class="tr_bq">"I got both of these tattoos in a bit of a grief stricken haze. I did not form a relationship with the artists in question, I turned up on the day and they slotted me in there and then. I didn’t want the artist or the tattooing experience to overshadow the meaning." </blockquote>This first tattoo was done in the spring of 2008:<br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjY7RQ_Ke3DFcWUcIIGojUEPkg-T2HlHFuFmw7Hz3198Rh-ni634jUi8ylHpxLLootcFnBX2wJE0LRT2ZBewDfvk4ARiSGVfkVtpiPn0KR7PoIVWQGi4p66MYW27rSU7JMKMSDw81IM4y0/s1600/Let+Go.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="348" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjY7RQ_Ke3DFcWUcIIGojUEPkg-T2HlHFuFmw7Hz3198Rh-ni634jUi8ylHpxLLootcFnBX2wJE0LRT2ZBewDfvk4ARiSGVfkVtpiPn0KR7PoIVWQGi4p66MYW27rSU7JMKMSDw81IM4y0/s400/Let+Go.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br />Jo elaborates:<br /><blockquote class="tr_bq">"The inspiration for this tattoo came, in part, from my over-indulgence in the song '<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Let_Go.ogg">Let Go</a>' by <a href="http://www.myspace.com/froufrou">Frou Frou</a> (featured on the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Garden_State_(film)">Garden State</a> soundtrack) and equally from the death of my Grandad. I wanted something visual to remind me to let go of my past misdemeanours and lack of motivation, and to signify a push forward in my life that sprung from my Granddad’s last words to me 'keep on keeping it up' in relation to the study of my degree."</blockquote>She also shared this tattoo that was inked last summer, in 2011:<br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEit7uZP79FgMytEnMUh0mUgwXo7F352TjdxORrjrB6CWr_hcXe-gq5osmp33NVh95Ub894MfgZJNXx8wAF_xgq8PNiwu-9XLBcC9RIGLPnQW07MPQTeVUB6gmFoB-F2AA4ytW7k-UVVxrI/s1600/Hold+On.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEit7uZP79FgMytEnMUh0mUgwXo7F352TjdxORrjrB6CWr_hcXe-gq5osmp33NVh95Ub894MfgZJNXx8wAF_xgq8PNiwu-9XLBcC9RIGLPnQW07MPQTeVUB6gmFoB-F2AA4ytW7k-UVVxrI/s640/Hold+On.jpg" width="392" /></a></div><br />Jo Continues:<br /><blockquote class="tr_bq">"When my Grandpa died a couple of years later, it felt only natural for me to once again, signify this time in my life. I had completed my degree and achieved a First Class Honours. Neither of my grandfathers were around to see this, but I know they both would have been proud to know I had made it. I was proud of myself, and proved that holding on to what I wanted from life would have fruitful effects, just as my Grandad had said three years earlier."</blockquote>Here's a poem from Jo:<br /><br /><b>SAY IT W / POIS [ON] </b><br /><br />she tried <br />silent <br />He pursed <br /><br />‘Perhaps’    crisply,<br /><br />pressing it against her        and resentful        unexpectedly<br /><br />found another, eh ? you say, we go inside. <br /><br />Indoors he bent over the doll <br />seemed singularly loath to touch <br />kind of stuff before the ox heart <br />answer and <br /><br />surprised, you know <br />know anything about these horrible things <br />[I haven’t told her / if that’s what you mean] <br />admitting ? <br /><br />folding his pale soft hands together <br />them on his turquoise knees <br />see the doll <br />its chief disfigurement <br />deliberately inflicted <br /><br />either / a / sharp / knife / or / scissors <br /><br />the human shape of the thing made it particularly sinister.<br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;">~ ~ ~</div><div style="text-align: center;"></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><span style="text-align: -webkit-auto;"></span><br /><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="text-align: -webkit-auto;">Jo Langton is a poet from Manchester, UK, currently studying her MA in Creative Writing at the <a href="http://www.salford.ac.uk/">University of Salford</a>. Anna's Marriage Tattoo

With inkspotting, timing is an essential part of the luck in finding interesting tattoos.<br /><br />I was about to leave the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Farley_Post_Office">James Farley Post Office</a> when <a href="http://tattoosday.blogspot.com/2010/03/tattoos-i-love-melanies-hybrid-flower.html">Melanie</a> called me on my cell. During the several minutes that we spoke, a woman named <a href="http://annamumford.com/">Anna</a> walked up next to me and started preparing an envelope for mailing. Had Melanie not called, I would have been out on the street, completely missing her.<br /><br />Anna has a remarkable tattoo that travels up her arm, over her shoulder, onto her back, and down her side. Representing a species of kelp, the tattoo which honors her father, a marine biologist, was both too large and partially covered, for her to share with us here at Tattoosday.<br /><br />Rather, she allowed me to photograph this tattoo on her right biceps:<br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMMY6acCON7yz9w8-geG3d4dCCVUlpi7h72UIFCrj76o9TDlse8GVueMEGufoiIZ02PwdTZ8fbiuqBTHDnW0S3KuxUeuu6oa1fjeQlSwKMMjRBoq9rxlyPR3XKU1YNcKU9K5OcDfDM/s1600/Farmer+in+the+city.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMMY6acCON7yz9w8-geG3d4dCCVUlpi7h72UIFCrj76o9TDlse8GVueMEGufoiIZ02PwdTZ8fbiuqBTHDnW0S3KuxUeuu6oa1fjeQlSwKMMjRBoq9rxlyPR3XKU1YNcKU9K5OcDfDM/s640/Farmer+in+the+city.jpg" width="339" /></a></div><br />This tattoo, which looks a lot like a woodcut, is a representation of an ink drawing of a farmer in the city which, in turn, was inspired by the <a href="http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=11:0pfpxql5ldke">Scott Walker</a> song "Farmer in the City (Remembering Pasolini)" from his album <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tilt_%28Scott_Walker_album%29"><i>Tilt</i></a>.<br /><br />Take a listen:<br /><br /><object height="344" width="425"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/zIJzTWk6bSw&hl=en_US&fs=1&color1=0x006699&color2=0x54abd6"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/zIJzTWk6bSw&hl=en_US&fs=1&color1=0x006699&color2=0x54abd6" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object><br /><br />Rather than exchange wedding bands, Anna and her husband instead got matching tattoos. "Farmer in the City" is their song, and the tattoos are matrimonial bonds that are in their flesh, rather than on their hands.<br /><br />It's quite a lovely idea and reminds me of what our friend Carrie and her husband did (read about it <a href="http://tattoosday.blogspot.com/2009/02/carrie-returns-with-some-matrimonial.html">here</a>) after their wedding.<br /><br />This tattoo was inked by <a href="http://www.studiozee.com/aboutstudiozee.html">Zee</a> at <a href="http://www.studiozee.com/">Studio Zee</a> in New Haven, Connecticut.<br /><br />Thanks to Anna for sharing her matrimonial tattoo with us here on Tattoosday!
