Kara's Kara-cature (and a Killer Back Piece, to Boot)

I spotted Kara on 7th Avenue back in July.<br /><br />She was headed south while I was headed north. When I turned and saw her back piece, I whirled around and caught up to her to ask her about her work. She was kind enough to share. Happy Birthday, Tina Tassels!

One of the perks of randomly going up to people with interesting tattoos is that I have, over the years, met several burlesque performers. Whether it be <a href="http://tattoosday.blogspot.com/2009/10/annie-cherry-and-bindlestiff-willy-in.html">Annie Cherry</a> from Kansas City, or NY-based performers <a href="http://tattoosday.blogspot.com/2010/07/lovely-tattoo-of-legs-malone.html">Legs Malone</a> and <a href="http://tattoosday.blogspot.com/2010/10/queen-of-clams.html">Miss Clams Casino</a>, I occasionally find myself in the presence of some very talented artists.<br /><br />Case in point, this summer I ran into a woman on the subway with a diamond tattooed on one of her knuckles. A few months later, in the middle of the summer, when I sat down on the train next to a pink-haired lady on the subway, I recognized the work, but couldn't remember where I'd seen it. After five years of inkblogging, such things are hard to instantly recall.<br /><br />However, when I saw her diamond knuckle, it all came back to me, and Tina and I got to chatting again. "Basically," Tina told me, "it was my first tattoo to butter her up."<br /><br />The scissors and comb represent the fact that her mom is a salon owner and as Tina explained, "that's what I associate with her before anything ... she's a hard worker."<br /><br />Tina had this done in 2009 by <a href="http://deriksnell.com/">Derik Snell</a> when he was at <a href="http://handofglorytattoo.com/hog/about">Hand of Glory Tattoo</a> in Park Slope, Brooklyn. Derik now tattoos out of <a href="http://flyingtigertattoos.com/home.html">Flying Tiger Tattoo</a> in New Britain, Connecticut. The Queen of Clams

Thankfully, Miss Clams Casino was generous enough to send me the story at a later date:<br /><br /><blockquote>"Every year I go to the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burlesque_Hall_of_Fame">Burlesque Hall of Fame</a> weekend in Las Vegas and play in the official Burlesque Hall of Fame Poker Tournament. I enjoy poker, but I know that I'm probably not going to win, so I like setting little goals for the game with fabulous rewards...in 2009 I decided that if I won a hand with a pair of Queens I would get a tattoo to mark the occasion. Long story short, a few hands in I was dealt a pair of Queens and won the only hand I won that tournament. A few months later, my friend <a href="http://www.scarlettattoos.com/">Scarlet Sinclair</a> was getting started as a tattoo artist and was looking for willing guinea pigs. I told her the story and that I'd like some ink involving Queens and hearts and she came up with this incredible design. I went to see her at <a href="http://www.mattstribaldragontattoo.com/">Matt's Tribal Dragon Tattoo</a> in Bethpage, NY and was her 7th tattoo ever. Annie Cherry and Bindlestiff Willy in New York City

I met <a href="http://www.kcsob.com/anniecherry.html">Annie Cherry</a> outside of Penn Station in early September. She was talking with <a href="http://www.kcsob.com/bindlestiffwilly.html">Bindlestiff Willy</a>. She had visible tattoos. The phrase "Clowns need love too" is self-referential. This piece was inked by <a href="http://www.mercyseattattoo.com/portfolio-ss/portfolio.php">Scott Shickman</a>.<br /><br />Damian, who performs under the name of "Bindlestiff Willy," is a pantomime specialist who does a great <a href="http://www.charliechaplin.com/">Charlie Chaplin</a> routine. The pun in his stage name combines the "<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bindle">bindle </a>stick" commonly carried by hobos and tramps (in the Chaplinesque sense) and the raunchiness of "stiff Willy".<br /><br />His second tattoo, on the right arm, is a portrait of Charlie Chaplin's "Little Tramp" were he still alive.
