The Tattooed Poets Project: Khadija Anderson

Our next tattooed poet, <a href="http://khadijaanderson.com/">Khadija Anderson</a>, expressed an interest in our Tattooed Poets Project last year, so we're happy we were able to finalize her contribution for 2013.<br /><br />Noting "it was hard to choose since I love all my 7 tattoos!" Khadija sent us this photo:<br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRe1gOaK1cBmn05Xs-cm1tqdYdje0tk812E-RpBq98jQzk0u83pQvB7cJvGxgaPnT8wfMWHjTO7ylFQr4rbhCuzOG0_w9WICxP-ZZpfR_IGN_BcIkUiB8hrXr3uymf7Y6cHKLK0pv1pfU/s404/tattoo+Khadija+Anderson.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRe1gOaK1cBmn05Xs-cm1tqdYdje0tk812E-RpBq98jQzk0u83pQvB7cJvGxgaPnT8wfMWHjTO7ylFQr4rbhCuzOG0_w9WICxP-ZZpfR_IGN_BcIkUiB8hrXr3uymf7Y6cHKLK0pv1pfU/s400/tattoo+Khadija+Anderson.jpg" width="346" /></a></div><br />Khadija tells us:<br /><blockquote class="tr_bq">"My tattoo is Arabic calligraphy of a verse from the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quran">Qur'an</a> (<a href="http://quran.com/9/40">9:40</a>), " laa ta'hazen fa innah Allaha maana". The translation is 'Don't give up hope, Allah is with us.' I chose this design because the calligraphy is gorgeous, I love the humanitarian message of the verse, and I like to show that I am a Muslim in a non-traditional way. A friend of mine, Russell Moore, did the tattoo in my living room in Los Angeles in 2008 shortly after I moved back to LA. It was the 5th of my 7 tattoos."</blockquote>It seems appropriate that Khadija sent us a poem, as well, that is related to her faith:<br /><br /><b>Today for Jury Duty I decide to wear the Hijab</b><br /><br />for the first time in 5 years<br />except to pray<br />I put it on and felt<br />a familiar feeling<br /><br />People stared<br />since white skin blue eyes<br />and black skinny jeans<br />are not what most people imagine<br />a good Muslim would have on<br />under a scarf<br /><br />One man stared furiously<br />I held my tongue<br />and smiled sweetly<br />like the good Muslim<br />that I am<br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;">~ ~ ~</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><a href="http://khadijaanderson.com/">Khadija Anderson</a> returned in 2008 to her native Los Angeles after 18 years exile in Seattle. Khadija's poetry has been published in <a href="http://palehouse.com/about.html">Pale House</a>, <a href="http://unfetteredverse.blogspot.com/">Unfettered Verse</a>, <a href="http://www.washingtonpoets.org/">Washington Poets Association's</a> online <i>whispers & [Shouts]</i>, <a href="http://www.commonlinejournal.com/p/organization.html">CommonLine Project</a>, <a href="http://qarrtsiluni.com/">Qarrtsiluni</a>, <a href="http://www.guttereloquence.com/">Gutter Eloquence</a>, <a href="http://www.killpoet.com/ray/KillaP.swf">Killpoet</a>, <a href="http://www.wheelhousemagazine.com/home.html">wheelhouse 9</a>, and many other online and print journals. Alyssa's Arabic Ink

It wasn't Alyssa I approached on a Friday afternoon outside of <a href="http://www.thegarden.com/">Madison Square Garden</a>, but her friend, who had several visible tattoos.<br /><br />However, the friend was unhappy with all of her ink, so I asked if anyone else standing with her if they had work they'd like to share.<br /><br />Alyssa offered up this Arabic tattoo, behind her right ear:<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgEVKQCsO0V2sVFlphKw1QaqaHPyBJTNsldPpYJuNtPl_Ww5YBWWLNWF6eS8uWTHi1e5XZ_l0Y3Io_UQvT7aaFk2WA-wKYiHVrtrAJ4elg29T-1o2EhCQrDlYpEAyWN3ypiRwGLZFnG/s1600-h/Alyssa+Name.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5391366030416648690" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgEVKQCsO0V2sVFlphKw1QaqaHPyBJTNsldPpYJuNtPl_Ww5YBWWLNWF6eS8uWTHi1e5XZ_l0Y3Io_UQvT7aaFk2WA-wKYiHVrtrAJ4elg29T-1o2EhCQrDlYpEAyWN3ypiRwGLZFnG/s400/Alyssa+Name.jpg" style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 300px; height: 400px;" /></a><br />The script is the transliteration of her name, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alyssa">Alyssa</a>, which she said means "flourishing" in Greek.<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiv15hyphenhyphenlaVzPJpctdoyi3kx53UVfNNv4IBy1ovs89QlhGd5E6GYG1H9HctBdiQ00kiNMm-A2Gb8KAip4oQJ0I34e0kXaGaP27v7KNuKfhinbpGVmtsxyzXhpDm-V1U-fWN-5FFnR5tx/s1600-h/Alyssa+Name+closeup.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5391365620326111890" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiv15hyphenhyphenlaVzPJpctdoyi3kx53UVfNNv4IBy1ovs89QlhGd5E6GYG1H9HctBdiQ00kiNMm-A2Gb8KAip4oQJ0I34e0kXaGaP27v7KNuKfhinbpGVmtsxyzXhpDm-V1U-fWN-5FFnR5tx/s400/Alyssa+Name+closeup.jpg" style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 211px;" /></a><br />Definitions I have found point to it meaning "rational," or "noble," rather than "flourishing". Nonetheless, it is widely regarded as a very pretty name.<br /><br />This was tattooed at <a href="http://www.yelp.com/biz/crazy-fantasy-tattoo-new-york">Crazy Fantasy Tattoo</a> in Manhattan. Work from that shop previously posted on Tattoosday can be seen <a href="http://tattoosday.blogspot.com/search/label/Crazy%20Fantasy%20Tattoo">here</a>.<br /><br />It just so happened I recently read the book <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Arabic-Tattoos-Jon-Udelson/dp/0977985083/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1255176955&sr=8-1">Arabic Tattoos</a> compiled by Jon Udelson. It's an interesting look at the phenomenon of the increase in popularity of Arabic script tattoos, and well worth a gander.<br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><iframe src="http://rcm.amazon.com/e/cm?lt1=_blank&bc1=000000&IS2=1&bg1=FFFFFF&fc1=000000&lc1=0000FF&t=bill03-20&o=1&p=8&l=as1&m=amazon&f=ifr&md=10FE9736YVPPT7A0FBG2&asins=0977985083" style="width: 120px; height: 240px;" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0" frameborder="0" scrolling="no"></iframe><br /></div><br />My favorite Arabic tattoo that has appeared on Tattoosday is <a href="http://tattoosday.blogspot.com/2008/08/thea-illuminates-music.html">this one</a>.<br /><br />Thanks to Alyssa for sharing her tattoo with us here on the site!

Generally, when New Yorkers descend to the subway system, an additional layer of protective on-guardness (I know it's not a word, but it nails the sentiment) is added. For this reason, I generally leave the inked alone. But like every "general rule," an awesome tattoo trumps everything.<br /><br />So I snapped the photo of Thea's neck on the platform, and we chatted briefly there and on the R train after it rolled in.<br /><br />The piece is in Arabic, featuring the two words for "life" and "music". Although not an exact translation, Thea interprets the juxtaposition of both words as "life is music". She acknowledges it is not a precise translation, but that it is the meaning she derives from the piece.<br /><br />Thea is a singer, and music is an essential part of her identity. I must agree, it is an apt choice for ink, and I personally believe that Arabic is one of the most beautiful languages, as written. The way that Arabic is incorporated into Eastern art is unparallelled.<br /><br />The tattoo was inked at <a href="http://www.porcupinetattoo.com/">Porcupine Tattoo</a> in Brooklyn.<br /><br />Thanks much to Thea for sharing this awesome neck tattoo with us here on Tattoosday!
