The Tattooed Poets Project: Kimberly Escamilla

We here at Tattoosday had already decided to continue the Tattooed Poets Project in the "off" months (that is, from May through March, when it was <i>not </i>National Poetry Month), when I received a message from Kimberly Escamilla asking what had happened to the contribution she had submitted back in January.<br /><br />I slapped palm to forehead when I realized, I had lost someone in the shuffle. The continuation of the Tattooed Poets Project was a perfect chance for redemption.<br /><br />Kimberly is no stranger to Tattoosday, having participated in the Tattooed Poets Project back in 2011 (<a href="http://tattoosday.blogspot.com/2011/04/tattooed-poets-project-kimberly-mahler.html">here</a>), when she had a different last name. She was kind enough to reach out to me to share again and, also, kind enough to forgive me for overlooking her contribution. So, without further delay, here is the photo she sent along:<br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZmu8mg_DNSAmnCnWw7Mgnjr63OCsDzoVzXNDJBz3hc30E7woEgEfUGKYGLIOECwUR3SBV8-tNyWv5wNDpBHCjtKqGU4y_Fjlr_6AZFRcT1T8XTEp0drGievNs_RrWWsL52jDfkdXsfnc/s572-no/Kim+new.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZmu8mg_DNSAmnCnWw7Mgnjr63OCsDzoVzXNDJBz3hc30E7woEgEfUGKYGLIOECwUR3SBV8-tNyWv5wNDpBHCjtKqGU4y_Fjlr_6AZFRcT1T8XTEp0drGievNs_RrWWsL52jDfkdXsfnc/s572-no/Kim+new.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br />She noted that this tattoo was "not full of fun colors" like her others, but that it was "way more meaningful" to her. She elaborated:<br /><blockquote class="tr_bq">"We lost our daughter Sophia to<a href="http://www.trisomy18.org/site/PageServer?pagename=whatisT18_whatis"> Trisomy 18</a>. We chose to induce as the disease is most often fatal in the first few months of life. I wrote an article about it <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/kimberly-cates-escamilla/war-on-women_b_1415391.html">here</a> at the Huffington Post. We decided to get tattoos to honor her, and we learned that Mary Joy is open to using the remains of a loved one in the ink. Since Sophia is a Greek name, we decided to have the whole thing done in ancient Greek lettering--It's just her first name and the date we induced April 4, 2012. Mary Joy was able to do the tattoo on August 11, 2012, the day before Sophia was supposed to be born."</blockquote>I do recommend clicking through on Kimberly's link to the Huffington Post article in the paragraph above. It is a brave and wrenching account of losing a child.<br /><br />The artist Mary Joy, who is referenced above, is Mary Joy Scott, who works out of <a href="http://www.tattoocitysf.com/">Ed Hardy's Tattoo City</a> in San Francisco.<br /><br />Kimberly sent us the accompanying poem, as well:<br /><br /><b>Wisdom at Sweeties</b><br /><br />The neighborhood bar in North Beach is barren<br />except for one clutch of retired Italians whose late <br />lunch has blurred into an evening of beer and gossip.<br /><br />I know what my husband is going to order before we claim our stools,<br />before we leave the tattoo shop and walk the three blocks,<br />before Mary Joy unties the baggie of our daughter’s ashes,<br />lowers her head and needle, thanking us for trusting her hand <br />and the ink that would bond Sophia to both of us for life. <br /><br />Shots of Ouzo, tinged blue, like the inside of ice<br />are poured neat from a dusty bottle. <br />The bartender-mother asks why—are you Greek? <br />We show her our saran-wrapped wrists,<br />the Hellenic epitaph, knocking-back the first round.<br /><br />As we savor the sweet anise’s burn, I think of the monks <br />at Mount Athos who could never have predicted<br />their pet-project some 700 years later would treat<br />sour stomachs and jack-knifed hearts around the globe. <br /><br />The bartender-mother and eavesdropping Italians listen to our saga.<br />Rapt and teary, they raise their glasses to the purity of grief, <br />the kind of grief that a tattoo and Ouzo can only begin to admit. <br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;">~ ~ ~</div><br />Kimberly Escamilla’s recent work has appeared or forthcoming in <a href="http://www.deanza.edu/redwheelbarrow/">Red Wheelbarrow</a>, <a href="http://www.iun.edu/~nwadmin/plath/">Plath Profiles</a>, <a href="http://www.5ampoetry.com/">5AM</a>, <a href="http://www.dmqreview.com/">DMQ Review</a>, <a href="http://www.blogger.com/%3Ca%20href=%22http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1604861096/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=1604861096&linkCode=as2&tag=bill03-20%22%3EMy%20Baby%20Rides%20the%20Short%20Bus:%20The%20Unabashedly%20Human%20Experience%20of%20Raising%20Kids%20with%20Disabilities%3C/a%3E%3Cimg%20src=%22http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=bill03-20&l=as2&o=1&a=1604861096%22%20width=%221%22%20height=%221%22%20border=%220%22%20alt=%22%22%20style=%22border:none%20!important;%20margin:0px%20!important;%22%20/%3E">My Baby Rides the Short Bus</a> anthology, <a href="http://naugatuckriverreview.com/">Naugatuck River Review</a>, and <a href="http://cimarronreview.com/">Cimarron Review</a>. The Tattoosday Book Review - Tattoo Art: A Photographic Sourcebook

I'm not going to lie. There are a lot of quality books out on the shelves of your local bookstore (if you still have one) that showcase tattoo art and its best practitioners. I'm still partial to <a href="http://www.blogger.com/%3Ca%20href=%22http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0810997894/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=0810997894&linkCode=as2&tag=bill03-20%22%3ETattoo%20World%3C/a%3E%3Cimg%20src=%22http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=bill03-20&l=as2&o=1&a=0810997894%22%20width=%221%22%20height=%221%22%20border=%220%22%20alt=%22%22%20style=%22border:none%20!important;%20margin:0px%20!important;%22%20/%3E">Tattoo World</a> (edited by Marisa Kakoulas), which is a hefty brick of tattoo awesomeness.<br /><br />So how fair was I going to be when I came upon a copy  of <a href="http://www.blogger.com/%3Ca%20href=%22http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1848584792/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=1848584792&linkCode=as2&tag=bill03-20%22%3ETattoo%20Art:%20A%20Photographic%20Sourcebook%3C/a%3E%3Cimg%20src=%22http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=bill03-20&l=as2&o=1&a=1848584792%22%20width=%221%22%20height=%221%22%20border=%220%22%20alt=%22%22%20style=%22border:none%20!important;%20margin:0px%20!important;%22%20/%3E">Tattoo Art: A Photographic Sourcebook</a> by <a href="http://www.doralba.com/">Doralba Picerno</a>, I was pleasantly surprised by the quality and layout of this undertaking.<br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://images.angusrobertson.com.au/images/ar/97818485/9781848584792/0/0/plain/tattoo-art-a-photographic-sourcebook.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://images.angusrobertson.com.au/images/ar/97818485/9781848584792/0/0/plain/tattoo-art-a-photographic-sourcebook.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />The book is clearly and concisely written, with sections divided up into your standard categories - Famous Faces, Fantasy World, Natural World, Getting Away, Love Objects, Symbolism, Fusion, etc. Each section has a short paragraph or two, but the bulk of the 120+ pages (8.9 by 11 inches) are devoted to crisp, clean photos of stunning and well-executed tattoos.<br /><br />What is particularly interesting to me is the heavy European slant. Picerno, who is a photographer living in London, focuses primarily on the work of artists in the UK and the European mainland. There are a few exceptions, like <a href="http://www.bugsartwork.com/index.cfm?CFID=3235729&CFTOKEN=14297025">Bugs</a> in California and <a href="http://www.liorcifer.com/frmSet.htm">Liorcifer</a> in NYC, but despite the lack of familiar names (at least to this American-centric ink blogger), the unfamiliarity of the work made it that much more enjoyable.<br /><br />I wish that I had more images to show you, but they are scarce online, which is ultimately a good thing, I guess. The list price on the book is $12.95, which is a veritable bargain, especially considering how full of fun and amazing work this volume is.<br /><br />This title is a hidden gem which is a spectacular addition to any tattoo fan's library!<br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><iframe frameborder="0" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" scrolling="no" src="http://rcm.amazon.com/e/cm?lt1=_blank&bc1=000000&IS2=1&bg1=FFFFFF&fc1=000000&lc1=0000FF&t=bill03-20&o=1&p=8&l=as4&m=amazon&f=ifr&ref=ss_til&asins=1848584792" style="height: 240px; width: 120px;"></iframe><br /></div><span style="font-size: xx-small;"><br /></span><b id="docs-internal-guid-37263786-9137-a98e-9025-0e4fba95279b" style="font-weight: normal;"><span style="font-size: xx-small;"></span></b><br /><div dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.15; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><b id="docs-internal-guid-37263786-9137-a98e-9025-0e4fba95279b" style="font-weight: normal;"><span style="font-size: xx-small;"><span style="font-family: Arial; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">This entry is ©2013 Tattoosday.</span></span></b></div><b id="docs-internal-guid-37263786-9137-a98e-9025-0e4fba95279b" style="font-weight: normal;"><span style="font-size: xx-small;"><br /><span style="font-family: Arial; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"></span><span style="font-family: Arial; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">If you are seeing this on another website other than Tattoosday, without attribution, please note that it has been copied without the author's permission and is in violation of copyright laws. The Intersection of Fine Art and Tattoo

A couple of days ago, <i>T<a href="http://www.nytimes.com/">he New York Times</a> </i>posted a special report under the heading of "the art of collecting." The article (<a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2013/05/10/arts/artsspecial/Tracing-the-transformation-of-tattoos-.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0">here</a>) was called "Tattooing Makes Transition From Cult to Fine Art."<br /><br />After my obligatory eye-rolls (Cult? Really?), I perused the article and was pleasantly surprised.<br /><br />I normally throw such things up in link lists, but I was intrigued by the fact that model Kate Moss was tattooed by the late artist Lucien Feud:<br /><br /><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://tattoosdayuk.files.wordpress.com/2012/11/kate-moss-tatoo.jpg?w=640&h=392&crop=1" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="245" src="http://tattoosdayuk.files.wordpress.com/2012/11/kate-moss-tatoo.jpg?w=640&h=392&crop=1" width="400" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">from <a href="http://tattoosdayuk.wordpress.com/2012/11/20/a-lucien-freud-tattoo/">Tattoosday UK</a> via the <i>Daily Mail</i></td></tr></tbody></table>The discussion touched on the value of body art as a legitimate art form ("Fine" art, if you will) and Ms. Moss even joked about the value of these Freud tattoos if they were grafted off of her skin. A shocking idea, but certainly worth wondering about, hypothetically.<br /><br />It's a great read and I was also pleased to see <a href="http://www.dukeriley.info/">Duke Riley's</a> name pop up, along with a photo of one of his tattoos:<br /><br /><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://graphics8.nytimes.com/images/2013/05/10/arts/artsspecial/10iht-rarttattoo10B/10iht-rarttattoo10B-popup.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://graphics8.nytimes.com/images/2013/05/10/arts/artsspecial/10iht-rarttattoo10B/10iht-rarttattoo10B-popup.jpg" width="317" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">from <i>The New York Times</i>, courtesy of Duke Riley</td></tr></tbody></table>I am honored to say that we have featured work from Duke previously <a href="http://tattoosday.blogspot.com/2013/01/daisy-shares-some-lovely-work-from-east.html">here</a> and <a href="http://tattoosday.blogspot.com/2009/02/lizzs-tattoo-anchors-her-to-her-brother.html">here</a>.<br /><br /><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmpXChj6BpJTSjkWwZJxlCcIR4jVStADIpFOOwvxRRyyuKiMaAUUJpHtWPv2V5FdkDqNqyXayer3nFFLrxOVUHE_PEWO8WRAm-NHjfcQhegnMitIOQiZXjTWXoGeFV-vzkJPtkT5b26Uk/s614/photo.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmpXChj6BpJTSjkWwZJxlCcIR4jVStADIpFOOwvxRRyyuKiMaAUUJpHtWPv2V5FdkDqNqyXayer3nFFLrxOVUHE_PEWO8WRAm-NHjfcQhegnMitIOQiZXjTWXoGeFV-vzkJPtkT5b26Uk/s640/photo.jpg" width="244" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Work on Daisy by Duke Riley</td></tr></tbody></table>I always like to share stories in the media that features some of the talented artists whose work I've had the pleasure to come across in my travels.<br /><br />If you like what you see, Duke's shop is <a href="http://www.eastrivertattoo.com/">East River Tattoo</a> and, if he's busy, check out <a href="http://www.eastrivertattoo.com/artists/sue_jeiven.php">Sue Jeiven's</a> work, as well.<br /><br /><b id="docs-internal-guid-37263786-8f14-cb53-1fe8-1ddee8da2c67" style="font-weight: normal;"></b><br /><div dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.15; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><b id="docs-internal-guid-37263786-8f14-cb53-1fe8-1ddee8da2c67" style="font-weight: normal;"><span style="font-family: Arial; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"><span style="font-size: x-small;">This entry is ©2013 Tattoosday.</span></span></b></div><b id="docs-internal-guid-37263786-8f14-cb53-1fe8-1ddee8da2c67" style="font-weight: normal;"><span style="font-size: x-small;"><br /><span style="font-family: Arial; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"></span></span><div dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.15; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span style="font-size: x-small;"><span style="font-family: Arial; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">If you are seeing this on another website other than Tattoosday, without attribution, please note that it has been copied without the author's permission and is in violation of copyright laws. I'm Just a Bill, Yes, I'm Only a Bill

Last summer my small birthday gathering was punctuated by an unexpected gift from friends, Ronni and Wayne, and their kids Emma and Eric: a gift certificate for <a href="http://www.brooklyntattoo.com/">Brooklyn Tattoo</a>, on Smith near Atlantic in downtown Brooklyn.<br /><br />I was no stranger to the shop, in theory, having passed it many times and featured work by several artists (reviewable <a href="http://tattoosday.blogspot.com/search/label/Brooklyn%20Tattoo">here</a>).<br /><br />Getting new work done is a cerebral process - I tend to think about it on different levels, and I pieced together a concept of a piece and then matched it up to <a href="http://www.adamsuerte.com/">Adam Suerte</a>, based on what I knew of his style. The fact that I had a gift certificate made it easier, but it was this abbreviated exchange of messages that clinched it:<br /><br />Me: Are you familiar with the "I'm Just a Bill" character from <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schoolhouse_Rock!"><i>Schoolhouse Rock</i></a>?<br /><br />Adam: Oh yes, I am a product of <i>Schoolhouse Rock</i> and Saturday morning cartoons in general! ... Absolutely, i'd be honored to [do that].<br /><br />That's all I needed to know that Adam was my guy so we met once to discuss layout and earlier today, the eponymous "Bill" was tattooed on my outer left ankle:<br /><br /><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMbdDF-pDyHm_5zRnS2WS83joEOUT9y6uDPuyR-g-og-Ew8gXuioB7kSYIlovwnZXkRSSwXb1TPMIMJAcXGNJTxeVoS6IBxpQwlDkKFevXk2ExhMZt07zREM65Ve0oFeEiDegEkWarzeY/w401-h572-no/photo.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMbdDF-pDyHm_5zRnS2WS83joEOUT9y6uDPuyR-g-og-Ew8gXuioB7kSYIlovwnZXkRSSwXb1TPMIMJAcXGNJTxeVoS6IBxpQwlDkKFevXk2ExhMZt07zREM65Ve0oFeEiDegEkWarzeY/w401-h572-no/photo.jpg" width="448" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Photo by Adam Suerte</td></tr></tbody></table>This is a raw, fresh shot from Adam's phone, and I must commend him for his excellent work, especially in light of my overactive nerves that sent my foot a-twitching throughout the process. I was a bit embarrassed because I've prided myself on sitting well, but when you don't have control over some reflexes, it can be stressful. However, Adam handled it well and did a great job. I'm extremely pleased.<br /><br />Lest you not know what "Bill" is all about, he premiered in 1975 as part of the "<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/America_Rock#America_Rock">America Rock</a>" series is Schoolhouse Rock.
